Speakers representing Canada’s largest banks and credit unions – including TD Bank, Royal Bank of Canada and Mainstreet Credit Union – will reveal how their organisations are preparing for consumer-driven banking, as part of a packed agenda at Open Banking Expo Canada on June 11.

In the first panel debate of the Expo, ‘Mobilizing Made in Canada: Getting our consumer-driven banking rollout in order’, delegates will hear from Sandeep Achar, director strategy, emerging businesses at BMO and Shekher Puri, vice president, digital components and platforms at Royal Bank of Canada.

Alongside speakers from Mastercard and Symcor, they will discuss and debate the industry’s approach to governance, timelines for implementation, and accreditation in Canada.

Elsewhere on the agenda, Heather Davis, senior director, innovation at CIBC, Cathy Ly, vice president customer experience, marketing and Open Banking lead at EQ Bank and Jennifer Rodrigues, associate vice president at TD Bank will take part in a panel debate about the fintech and bank perspective.

They will offer their views on data readiness, compliance and consent, as well as their insights into infrastructure, privacy and data frameworks, in light of the Canadian government’s announcement about Open Banking in Budget 2024.

The Main Stage will also host a panel on ‘Credit union modernization: Designing the future of finance and digital experiences’, moderated by Michelle Winsor, chief executive officer of Accelera Ecosystem.

She will be joined by key representatives from across the credit union industry, including Beem Credit Union president and chief executive officer Brian Harris, Mainstreet Credit Union’s chief transformation officer Jamie Kruspel, as well as Shanti Samroo, chief financial officer at Atlantic Edge Credit Union and Sabena Sandhu, manager, policy at the Canadian Credit Union Association.

Last year, Kruspel told Open Banking Expo that customers and members stand to benefit the most from Open Banking.

“When a customer or a member is able to validate who they are with the tap of a button, carry their information around with them wherever they want to go, they are going to have a bevy of choices to serve their financial needs,” he said.

This year, the Open Finance Stage at Open Banking Expo Canada features international use cases, which aim to shine a light on how Latin American banking groups have adopted Open Banking.

Luis Miguel Zapata, vice president, digital ecosystems at Bancolombia will reveal how banks, fintechs and regulators have collaborated to bring Open Banking and Open Finance to fruition in Colombia.

Delegates can also expect to hear from Alejandro Servin, BBVA Mexico’s head of Open Banking and Javier Garcia Lemus, head of product for Open Banking at BBVA Mexico.
