Melbourne-based fintech platform Airwallex has launched its online payments app on Shopify to help merchants accept cross-border payments.

The Airwallex Online Payments App is a payment gateway plugin offered through Airwallex’s payment acceptance solution, which covers a number of payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay bank cards.

It also covers more than 30 other local payment methods across Asia-Pacific and Europe, such as GrabPay in Southeast Asia, WeChat Pay in APAC, and Bancontact and Sofort in Europe.

Airwallex said its merchants can also receive settlements in over seven major currencies, including US dollars, thereby avoiding the fees incurred by currency conversions.

Using the app, merchants will also be able to accept payments directly into their Airwallex multi-currency wallets and pay out with borderless cards or transfers.

Ravi Adusumilli, SVP of partnerships at Airwallex, said: “Our app is one of many offerings we have built to help merchants accept cross-border payments.

“In this case, by using an Airwallex account, merchants can gain secure access to a multitude of payment methods, both globally and locally, in a convenient, fast and affordable way possible.”

Airwallex has raised more than $800 million in funding since it was established in 2015 in Melbourne, Australia. It now has over 1,200 employees across 19 locations globally.

Earlier this year, Airwallex hired Pranav Sood as general manager, EMEA to lead its expansion across the region. Sood joined from GoCardless, where he was VP, small business.
