Gifftid: Making SMEs legible to the capital they can already absorb

As Open Banking and Smart Data expand what’s visible about a business, I keep coming back to a strange gap: many SMEs are still assessed by instruments built to read the past. Filed accounts. Collateral. Trading history. Not the forward evidence a modern business actually carries: contracted pipeline, recurring revenue, retention, delivery record.

We call this a legibility gap, not a lending gap. The businesses aren’t unfundable, they’re unread. It isn’t a story about weaker firms, it’s a story about instruments built for a different kind of business than the one now applying.

Across 55,000 UK companies we’ve assessed, roughly four in 10 read strongly on commercial signals, but only about one in eight read as capital-ready under conventional criteria. Close to a quarter sit in between: neither clearly fundable nor clearly not, deferred rather than declined.

Gifftid’s R³ and R⁴ products give lenders, funders and procurement teams a way to read those forward operational signals directly, so they can assess firms their current instruments miss. The decision itself stays exactly where it already sits: we augment the process an institution already runs, we don’t replace it, and we don’t lend, invest, recommend or introduce.

It’s a live problem in a market that’s rapidly gaining new sources of forward-looking data. Open Banking and Smart Data are building the pipes. The next question is whether the instruments reading what flows through them are built for the past or the future. That’s the layer we’re building for.

We’ll be exploring this properly in a podcast session at the Expo, ‘Visible, not legible: What Open Finance still can’t tell a lender’, with guests from across the capital chain who see this gap from different sides.

Gifftid will be on Stand B5 in the Barclays Innovation Zone at Open Banking Expo UK & Europe, and we’d welcome the chance to talk through what this looks like in practice.
